Maintenance

Sand Filter Systems need regular maintenance to prevent costly premature failure.

A failed Sand Filter system can cost as much as $12,000 to replace. Adding the cost of a failed Drain Field, the cost can be as high as $15,000 to replace both.

The Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) recommends that maintenance should be performed annually on all Septic Sand Filter systems to insure that they continue to operate as designed and approved.

Mike Hamer is DEQ Licensed with the training, experience and expertise in the operation and maintenance of Sand Filter systems.

The average Sand Filter system can last indefinitely if properly maintained.

In order to adequately maintain the septic system as a whole, a thorough check needs to be made of all the various components of the system.

The septic tank needs to be inspected to ensure that the risers aren’t allowing water intrusion, all of the baffles are intact and that the general condition of the tank is in good order. As well, the scum and sludge layers need to be measured to determine if the tank needs to be pumped.

The septic tank pump systems mechanical and electrical components needs to be inspected to determine that they are functioning as designed. Maintenance requires the pumps to be cleaned and dose volumes measured and compared to previous readings. Filters and screens are cleaned.

The sand filter pump system, if applicable, is maintained in the same manner as the septic tank pump system.

Control system maintenance requires the float controls to be tested for proper activation. Control settings are adjusted and recalibrated as necessary. Data readings are recorded and compared to past readings. Voltage and amperage tests are conducted to determine potential degradation.

The sand filter manifold, during maintenance, is flushed and cleaned. Pressure line squirt tests are performed and orifices cleaned.

The drain field is inspected for indications of potential failure and to ensure that vegetation is not intrusive.
